RICE Method: Aiding Sprains of Older Adults

Falls and sprains are the most common accidents of the elderly since their mobility and balance are getting weaker. Often, seniors are safe at home since their families will hire the services of a home health aide. With home health aides, hands-on care is guaranteed for they are trained to provide quality and first aid in case of emergencies.

With our compassionate caring in Ohio, we make sure to train our caregivers to learn the basic first aid assistance. With sprains, the RICE method is the safest way to aid the patient. To apply the RICE method, here’s how it is done:

  • Rest
After an injury, let the patient rest the injured joint or ligament. This is important to avoid delaying the healing process.
  • Ice
During the resting period of at least 48 hours, apply a cold compress to the swollen area to reduce swelling and ease the pain. Do this for at least 10 minutes every after 4 hours. Make sure not to put the compress on for more than 20 minutes.
  • Compression
To reduce the chances of internal bleeding, wrap the injured area with an elastic wrap bandage. Make sure not to wrap tightly as it can cause more damage to the affected ligaments.
  • Elevation
While doing the three steps above, see to it that the sprained joint is elevated. Keep the joint elevated above the heart level.
